I was getting complaints that new registrations were getting "eMail Service not available" when submitting new aliases. Same problem for users updating accounts. I got the same error, hit the back button on the browser, and resubmitted the data, and it worked. What should I be looking for that might cause this problem?

The sendmail service is a part (program) of your server.
So please ask your hoster what happens.

I have it configured to use my main mail server, which is working fine. The eAuction box can ping it without any drops, or delays. The local smtp logs show the box is happily sending out messages for a moodle server on the same box. Is their an smtp timeout somewhere in the script I can adjust.

No - there isn't.
You have to check the settings of your smtp mailer.

P.S.
Why dont' you use sendmail?
Are you on a windows server?

Sorry... I somehow missed your last reply... The box eAuction is on has sendmail, but I configured the script to use our main mail server for notifications. That box uses postfix

'postfix' is a clone of 'sendmail'.
If a script calls 'sendmail' - the server points to 'postfix'.
So it's just a server-internal matter.
